It was the poster child for U.S. anti-piracy crusaders: a Russian music download site that was an ersatz rival to iTunes and was brandished as an obstacle to Russia's entry to the World Trade Organization.
Now say goodbye to www.allofmp3.com and say hello to www.mp3sparks.com, complete with a similar design, similar legal disclaimers and even a Moscow phone number that is answered by the puzzled owners of a parquet flooring store.
Since last week, visitors have not been able to access the infamous allofmp3.com site, which offered tracks at a tenth the rates of Apple Inc.'s iTunes. Its Russian version, allofmp3.ru, says it is closed for maintenance.
Moscow prosecutors declined to confirm Tuesday whether the site has been shuttered once and for all, but allofmp3.com's disappearance coincided with talks on Sunday and Monday between presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush in the United States. That fueled speculation that Russia was demonstratively clamping down on its online piracy problem in a bid to sweeten relations that have soured amid disagreements on Kosovo and a planned U.S. missile shield in Eastern Europe. Allofmp3 has been cast as the epitome of Russia's shoddy copyright enforcement and repeatedly held up by U.S. trade negotiators as imperiling Moscow's WTO bid. |
